The Steering Committee 2008/2009 does not have the financial means or the authority to approve or reject events. It does however, reserve the right to subject proposed events to an evaluation to ensure they meet the requirements necessary to be included in the 'Calendar of Events'.

For registration to the calendar, please fill in the registration form and send it to info@400jaarhandel.nl (click here for contact information). You will be informed after screening by the steering committee whether the proposed event can be included in the calendar.

11 January - 25 May Holland & Japan: 400 Years of Trade
From 11 January to 25 May 2009, the Rijksmuseum at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport presents Holland & Japan: 400 Years of Trade, marking the four-hundredth anniversary of commercial ties between the Netherlands and Japan. The exhibition examines the privileged position Dutch traders enjoyed on the isolated island of Deshima and the artistic and cultural interchange that resulted from their commercial contacts. Among over 20 works presented in the show are lacquerware, porcelain, a screen and paintings from the Rijksmuseum collection. The centrepiece is a scroll painting of over 6 metres in length, depicting scenes of everyday life on Deshima.

Dutch composer Kees Olthuis composed a new work in honour of 400 years trade between Japan and the Netherlands: Jizô.

28 March - 21 JuneSilk Stories, Taishō Kimono 1900-1940
Silk Stories presents the development of the kimono during the period of 1900-1940. Besides kimonos, also haori (short jackets) and obi (broad brocade waist bands) are exhibited. A large part of the 120 pieces of clothing originates from the Taishō period (1912-26), the period of government of Emperor Yoshihito.

26 August- 13 December 2009From Here to Tokyo:400 years of trade with Japan
Now you have an unique chance to come and admire the world famous trade permit - the document with which the Shogun gave his permission - in the exhibition From Here to Tokyo. The exhibition held in De Verdieping van Nederland in the Hague runs from 26 August to 13 December 2009. It displays dozens of wonderful objects that together form an illustration of the historical trade relations between Japan and the Netherlands. The objects come from the collection of the National Library of the Netherlands and the National Archives, and are supplemented with several outstanding specimens from the Royal Archives and the National Museum of Ethonology. You will receve as a permanent reminder a booklet which explains in detail all the articles on show. Come along and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of Japan.

1 – 18 September 2009From The Hague to Hirado and back
The museum pieces which are being put on display at the City Hall of The Hague originate from the Matsura Historical Museum in Hirado, Japan. They date back from 1600 to 1885 and symbolise trade relations in this period between Japan and The Netherlands. The museum is owned by the renowned
Matsura family. Throughout the centuries many highly ranked
executives and military personnel hailed from the Matsura family. The museum is home to around 30.000 objects, most of which have been owned by the family for generations.

During the largest Whisky Festival of the Netherlands, renowned whisky expert Mr. Tatsuma Minagawa will lead a Japanese whisky tasting in the SieboldHuis.
